Fishing Tales

Fishing Tales

Learning Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the elements of setting, character, plot, and theme in fiction.
  2. Use fiction to portray fishing as a recreational pastime.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of environmental conservation as a concept.

Teacher Background:

A fishing trip provides an excellent setting for a fictional story. Students can develop writing skills by describing the aesthetics of a natural river environment, exploring how an outing in nature can affect characters' ideas about the world, and developing a moral or message.

In this lesson, students read a short story about an age-appropriate protagonist and their experience fishing or boating. Then, students write their own short story about what it would be like to go on a fishing or boating trip alone, with family, or with a group of friends.
